Okay, the title was morbid. My apologies. Well, let’s dive right in, shall we?

1. Monotype
Poster and webpage
Time: Budgeted 6 hours for the two layouts. Spent 3 hours initially, and 4 hours on reworks. They were pretty crappy originally..
This reminded me of being in Matt’s class again… oh the grids. Cambria. A classic font. I kinda enjoyed doing these, though. It was relaxing to not have to deal with color or illustrations.

2. Happiness
Newspaper layout
Time: Budgeted 6 hours. Spent 4.5 hours on an original layout, including reworking. But that looked awful, so I scraped it and completely redid it within 3 hours. And you know what, I’m really liking it. I’m a big fan of having huge margins. Negative space is myyy favorittteee. (forgive me, it’s 3 am)

3. Detours
Two Magazine spreads
Time: Budgeted time was 10 hours. I spent 5 hours on the original layout, and 4 hours reworking it. This is the only assignment that I WASN’T over budget on.
The target audience for this is both women and men adult Midwesterners. So I decided to go with a more simple layout. I had originally mad the spread with 5 pages… not sure why? So I had to redo that. This is the only one that I didn’t get approved, so I’m hoping it’s up to par!

4. Herpetology
Poster and Rotating banner

Time: Budgeted 6 hours. Spent 4 hours on concept, design, layout. 3 hours on reworking and doing the banner. Only 1 hour over budget. Not too shabby.
I had trouble thinking of a good concept for this one. No one got that the chameleon was camouflaged in the background, with the period being it’s eye. So I had to change it and add the faint chameleon. And no, I didn’t catch the Valentine’s day hint for the concept. Wish I would’ve, might have saved a few hours.

5. Yellowstone
Poster, iPad vertical and iPad horizontal

Time: Budgeted 6 hours. Spent 4 hours initially. 2 hours on reworks, and for some reason it took me 2 hours for the iPad graphics. WHYY did that take so long?
When given the choice, I usually tend to make assignments with illustrations rather than photos, so this was new for me. And I’m please with the result. I always feel like I’m copping out with photos; cheating almost. But hey, it worked.

6. Red Barn
Poster, KAA web banner, and Truman web banner
Time: We were budgeted 6 hours. I spent 4.5 hours on original concepts, layout, illustrations, etc. and 4 hours on reworking. That equals 8.5 hours, over budget whoops.
So inches does NOT equal pixels EVER. I accidentally created my Truman web banner as inches. Then by the time I wanted to open it in Photoshop as a jpeg, it took a million minutes to rasterize. And I finally realized what was wrong at that point, so I had to recreate it in the right sized document. Other than that, this assignment turned out pretty well in my opinion. The grid structure and hierarchy make the simple barn background work. The concept was difficult to come up with for this one. How does one make a barn look interesting?

7. Stress
Magazine layout
Time: Budgeted 6 hours. Spent 5 hours on brainstorming, layout, and cutting out all those godforsaken pieces of head explosions. Then I spent another 5.5 hours on revisions. That thing was a piece of work. I’ve never been so tired of looking at my roommate’s face (not that I stare at it normally?..) Anyway, I finally figured out what to do with those pull quotes. And if I do say so myself, it’s lookin goood. Also, I love that little black square at the end of the body copy. Don’t know why I love that so much.

8. Smokey
Three ads and Animating rotating Truman web banner
Time: Budgeted 9 hours plus 3 for banner, spent about 6 hours on everything initially, and spent 3.5 hours on revisions. Then 2 for the banner. This one was pretty close to budgeted time! Yay!
Overall, I’m pretty please with my work. I feel like I’m getting better at this whole design thing that I’ll be calling my job in a few years (scary!). By the end, I got way faster. That might have been because I was working on only reworking (which took me way less time than concepts). And I’m really glad we’re doing this budgeting thing. Before, I had NO idea how long I was supposed to be spending on things. I couldn’t really compare to classmates either because most do their work at home. So it sucks, but budgeting is a good thing. Now the question is: do I go to sleep for a few hours and risk not being able to wake up, and *gasp* MISSING my exam? Or do I stay up to make sure I won’t fall asleep? Decisions.
