I only have one approval for my portfolio so far! Freakin out! It seems like I’ve spent a lot of time on things but I’m not getting anywhere. Here’s my third red barn rework, with changes from class today. Below it are some from before.
I’ve been on a role today reworking vis. comm. assignments like nobody’s business. If my eyeballs don’t fall out of my head soon from staring at a screen non-stop I’ll be surprised. This one’s from awhile back. I changed the layout from vertical to horizontal, as Rusty suggested. Kept the same pictures, wording and color scheme. Click for the old poster design.
You know that feeling you get when you loose a file that you’ve been working on for a few hours? Been there, done that. After restarting on this book cover, this is what I got. I think I’m happier with what I ended up with anyway. I tried to keep it minimalistic; added a few feathers to tie it all together. The kids inside the dead bird symbolize innocence. Tom Robinson being killed= the killing of innocence. And as a side note, I just came from a mandatory lecture on study skills, and this is an actual quote from my professor: ” I’m going to help you study more smartly.”
Here’s the third draft. I realized on my second one that a bunch of the text was missing, grr. There’s more white gutter space along the edges than it looks like in the jpeg. I made some exploding pieces behind and among the text; put more pieces in the gutter; got rid of the extra white space on the right; added necessary text that I’d forgotten. I’ll end with a quote from my roommate (the one in the picture): “Did your professor love my picture? He probably asked if I could be a model for your drawing classes. Look out! Pretty soon I’ll be doing headache commercials *puts hand to head dramatically*. I got this stress thing down.”
Stress, ah what a fitting topic. This is my second draft of the spread. I’m pretty happy with it. Thanks to my lovely roommate who offered her head up for explosion.
And this was my old layout. I never finished it though, and decided to scrap it when I realized I couldn’t do anything with that ‘Bang head here’ circle. Kinda sad I had to trash that.
Just a quick update: I posted new art prints, including iPhone and iPod cases on my art shop. These original designs were created in my Fibers I class. The ‘Aztec Rave’ design was created by carving a stamp, which was turned into a Thermofax to allow me to screen print it onto white fabric. The ‘Lucky Blazer’ design was created by cutting out a design on contact paper, which was stuck on a screen to be printed. The original colors were dark blue and yellow; I used Photoshop for the different color variations.
College student+artist=poor! Soo, if you want to buy some artwork, you’re in luck. Or just look around! My online art shop is here. There’s some drawings from my Drawing I , II, and Illustration classes, as well as just random stuff. These come in art prints, framed art prints, stretched canvases, iPhone cases, and iPad, laptop, and iPod skins. I don’t have a lot of artwork up yet, but I plan to soon, so check back. I added a link ‘Buy Artwork’ in the tab above for future reference.

Instead of videos shot with a video camera, singers have been opting for lyric videos. As an aspiring designer, I think these are a really neat alternative to generic videos. I’ve been seeing a lot of these lately, and I wish I had the know-how (or time) to make one myself. Not only are they neat to watch, but then you actually know what words you’re supposed to be singing. I’m not saying any of these are my favorite songs (or that I even like them), but the designs are neat to look at.
Here’s a few examples:
‘Part Of Me’ by Katy Perry
‘All of the Lights’ by Kanye West
‘Turn Me On’ by Nicki Minaj and David Guetta
‘Without You‘ by David Guetta
‘Where Them Girls At’ by David Guetta
‘Higher’ by Taio Cruz
‘Who’s That Chick’ Rihanna
Detours Magazine spread. Woops… I made a 6 page spread instead of a 4 page spread. Not sure how that happened. I ‘d much rather create posters than magazine spreads. Body copy=my enemy. One thing I wish I would’ve done from the beginning is left room for the page number and ‘winter 2012′ at the top of the pages. If they look kindof awkward it’s because I threw them in there last minute.
